Versa-Style

THEN: Full of Fire (2018 Festival)

NOW: UnMaskulinity

Jackie aka Miss Funk & Leigh aka Breeze-lee together shared a common passion for dance which led to the creation of Versa-Style Dance Company in 2005.

Versa-Style Dance Company is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that serves the youth of Los Angeles and is also a professional dance ensemble that consists of committed and conscientious artists representing the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles. Versa-Style creates highly energetic work that fuses dances that are culturally significant to our communities!

As reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots, history, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation.

About the work

UnMaskulinity utilizes freestyle (improvisation) of various streetdance forms to explore themes around the vulnerability of men. Each artist uniquely navigates his own journey and struggles with embracing his emotional being in a society that tries to suppress freedom of expression. We seek to change the narratives around masculinity and strength by accepting our true selves and finding power in emotional catharsis.
