PROGRAM NOTES
This new dance/media work is a personal homage to one of the early pioneers of electronic dance music, Patrick Cowley; a genius composer whose life was cut short by the AIDS epidemic of the 1980’s. I am a huge fan of electronic music and science fiction, so when I first heard Cowley’s iconic dance track; Megatron Man, released in 1981, I felt an immediate connection to his music. Cowley’s compositions have been a significant influence on some of my favorite bands from the 80’s and 90’s such as The Pet Shop Boys and New Order, both of which have stated that Cowley was a big inspiration for creating their own sound. I decided to play with a retro science-fiction/campy aesthetic to align with the era in which Cowley’s song was created and to celebrate his contribution to the disco-era and nightclub scene. This piece was a team effort, my dancers really dedicated their time, talent, and energy into helping create this work. A HUGE thank you to my super-hero dancers! Kince de Vera, Simon McCrea Adler and Michael Walton!
Feel free to whoop and yeah during our performance!
