Gabriel Mata and Armani Rey Colón are Washington, DC–based contemporary dance choreographers and performers whose collaborative practice explores queer Latinx identity, cultural memory, and the de-centering of eurocentric movement traditions. Together, they create work that investigates the body as a site of resistance, intimacy, and negotiation—where shared histories intersect with differing experiences of access, status, and immigration.
What began as an artistic exchange during Mata’s time as an artist in residence at the Peabody Institute developed into an ongoing collaborative relationship. Their choreography draws from rigorous contemporary dance training while actively interrogating its limits, allowing alternative movement vocabularies to emerge through lived experience, cultural reference, and embodied research. Through works such as Vaqueeros, Cuerpo de quien, Rainbow Fragments, and Brownness Num 3, Mata and Colón examine masculinity, queerness, and Brownness as fluid and relational states rather than fixed identities.
As co-founders of Cuerpo x Cuerpo, they center collaboration as both method and ethos, creating performance spaces that honor parallel identities while embracing contradiction and multiplicity. Their work contributes to ongoing conversations around equity, representation, and authorship in contemporary dance, positioning the queer Latinox body not at the margins, but as a generative force shaping new choreographic futures.
